Is this the end of manual transmission M5? The news have been going around, that upcoming BMW F10 M5 might only come in automatic transmission. Noooooo!!
It is said that BMW engineers in the M division have trouble fitting the M Dual Clutch Transmission (M DCT) to the car. This new M5 codenamed the F10 is powered by a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which generates 550 horsepower. So apparently the torque is too much for the M DCT to handle.
The way to overcome this is by adding larger actuators to the M DCT, however the engineers decided not to do so as it would slow down the gearbox’s response time. So, the next best solution is by fitting the car with the ZF 8-speed automatic (sequential with paddle-shifters) gearbox.
And so, condolences to all M fans and enthusiasts. Proper manual gearbox M5 is no longer with us. Again, the F10 M5, will only be available in automatic.
